10 Best Workout Songs to Get You Pumped for the Gym

February 13, 2020 4 min read

If you don’t do, we don’t know how. Listening to music is the only way most of us can get through a workout! Putting in our earbuds and blocking out the pain requires the right kind of music, though. When working out, you deserve to feel hype, strong, and pumped up!

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 songs to get you pumped up at the gym. And don’t worry, these songs span across different genres, so there’s something here for everyone, whether you like rap or soft rock.

Rap

There are so many awesome rap songs that can get you hype for lifting or running. This is because of their fast rhythm and boss lyrics. Some of the most popular songs in the rap genre for working out are songs like:

Lose Yourself by Eminem, which is about as pumped up as you can get. The lyrics and rhythm fit together in a fast-paced way that will have you surging through every rep and set.

Stronger by Kanye West is another workout staple. With lyrics like, “let’s take ‘em high (top of the world, baby),” you’ll feel like every stride you run is taking you higher, faster, stronger.

Alternative

When I did CrossFit, our gym only played alternative music stations, and I can testify at how hype those songs got me! The basis for a lot of modern alternative rock songs are about overcoming obstacles, which make them perfect for the gym, plus they always have consistent beats that help with breathing and reps.

Centuries by Fall Out Boy is one of the favorites for many athletes. It’s a song about being remembered and being legendary, which is enough to spur anyone on through those last few miles.

Flower by Moby is another favorite, but for completely different reasons. Flower is better known as “Sally” because it repeats the lyrics, “bring Sally up, bring Sally down.” CrossFit gyms and athletic programs across the country use this song as a way to create new and more challenging exercises, like plank builds, sit-ups, or squats that follow the lyrics.

Rock

Now, I am going to have to divide this category into two different sections: hard rock and classic rock. Any hard rock or metal junkie will tell you that their preferred genre is so full of energy that it’s hard to not be hype when listening. That’s why the best hard rock songs to listen to while working out are:

Thunderstruck by AC/DC is one of the most beloved hard rock songs of all time; it’s also a great song to workout to. The repetition, like Flower, adds a new element where you can base an exercise around the lyrics. For example, doing a burpee every time they sing “thunderstruck.”

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes is one of those songs that could be in the alternative category, as well as rock, but its hard lyrics and heavy use of bass put it in this category. That same bass, especially when listening to the song with high-quality earbuds like the Rowkin Base Jump, will make every step feel unstoppable.

Now, I am classifying classic rock as any rock song that came out in the 1960s, 70s, or 80s, which is why AC/DC’s Thunderstruck was in the above category and not this one. Classic rock songs have the awesome trait of being anthems, which is why they are great to listen to during workouts. Our picks for this category are:

Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin is as cool as it gets. With the high vocals, there’s a reason they used it as Thor’s entrance song in Thor: Ragnarok. As soon as it starts, you’ll feel as strong as the god of thunder, himself.

We Will Rock You by Queen--I mean, of course, I had to pick this one! You can’t have a workout playlist without Queen. The beat and lyrics in this song will have you ready to win a war, let alone tackle the stair-stepper!

Pop

Now, this category is a big one, and it was hard to choose because there are so many amazing songs that get me hype, from really anything by Panic! At the Disco to Beyoncé, however, we do have to pick, and here they are:

Good as Hell by Lizzo has quickly become a workout favorite, despite only being released in 2019. The empowering lyrics and fierce beat will have you going deeper on every squat and walking to the next station with a swagger in your step.

Shut Up and Dance by WALK THE MOON is another song that can’t help how hype it is! The high energy this song puts out has--if I’m being honest--had me dancing in the middle of a workout because it just makes people so happy. And we all need that we need encouragement when working out, right?

Bottom Line

There are so many awesome workout songs out there, it was hard to choose a list of just 10. Your favorite may not be on here, and that’s okay! Just remember to keep a positive attitude whenever you step foot in the gym, and make sure that your earbuds and playlist are working as hard as you do.
