Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant: Do You Know the Difference?

September 09, 2019 2 min read

Deciding on a pair of earbuds can be tough, especially when you don’t know what all the jargon means. What is an IP rating anyway? Lucky for you, we have an answer to that.

IP stands for ‘Ingress Protection,’ and can tell you how protected your earbuds are. Every IP rating comes with the letters ‘IP’ and a number. For example, Rowkin earbuds rank in with an IPX5 rating.

Again, what exactly does that mean?

Water-Resistant

Water-resistant means your headphones or earbuds can be exposed to water, but not submerged in it. So, if you’re out in the yard doing some gardening and your 3-year-old gets a hold of the hose? Your earbuds would be just fine.

IP1 and IP2 earbuds or headphones are protected against gently dripping water, like rain or sweat. IP3 and IP4 are safe from any splashing or vertical spraying that you may find yourself in. IP5 (like our earbuds) and IP6 are safe from water jets, like a garden hose.

So, it’s safe to say that your Rowkin earbuds are water-resistant because they are protected against dripping, spraying, or splashing water, including sweat.

Waterproof

Some devices go above and beyond by being designed to stay on your person while submerged. These devices are classified as waterproof. Both IP7 and IP8 ratings are safe when immersed. However, it is important to note that IP7 rated devices can only be immersed up to 1 meter underwater, while IP8 rated devices are safe beyond that depth.

In addition, any waterproof earbuds require a 100% perfect fit in your ears. If it isn’t sealed correctly, this could cause an electric shortage.

Bottom Line

Technology jargon can be confusing, but we have your back!

IP ratings dictate how much exposure your device can take before being damaged by a liquid, specifically water.

IP ratings 1-6 are water-resistant, which means they can be exposed to water, but not submerged.

IP ratings 7 and 8 are waterproof, meaning they can withstand exposure to water, as well as immersion.

Make sure to remember your device’s IP rating the next time you stand a little too close to the pool, or the rain is pouring and you just happened to forget your umbrella!
