rat race
ˈrat ˌrās/
noun
A way of life in which people are caught up in a fiercely competitive struggle for wealth or power.
It’s easy to get caught up in the humdrum of daily life. The blare of your alarm yanks you out of your peaceful dream state. You groggily feel your way to the sink to brush your teeth, still dead to the world until the first drop of caffeine reaches your lips. You sit in traffic on your way to work, consuming radio music that has been formulaically crafted to produce an artificial sense of well-being. You work, you come home, you go to sleep, only to wake up and do it all again.
The fact of the matter is that humans crave novelty. There’s a region in our midbrain called the substantia nigra/ventral segmental which is activated when you experience something new or exciting. At the same time, dopamine, the brain’s “reward chemical”, is released into the brain. This influx of dopamine motivates us to seek rewards by exploring and adventuring into the unknown.
Life doesn’t have to be so monotonous. Rowkin believes in the value of exploration. Travel the world, acquaint yourself with new cultures, try new things, meet new people, and take chances. Your next move could lead to the adventure of a lifetime. There’s no better time than now, because the month of August is American Adventures Month.
